The Aeta is a minority group in the Philippines, who struggle with poverty.

We visited an organisation called Health And Development For All Foundation, who are helping them with food, education materials and other necessities. They also provide accomodation for some children nearby a school, it would otherwise be impossible for them to attend.

This Aeta girl was sitting inside one of the huts when we were interviewing her dad.

Protecting the Mangrove Waters from Commercial Motorboats

I first heard of this company when in Banaue, from an English couple who had just visited the Philippines. They said that in Bohol, there was a small kayak company fighting two bigger companies, affiliated with the government, who run motorised tours to see the fireflies in the mangroves. The kayak company says it disturbs nature and has seen massive decline in numbers of fireflies since, who are an indication of the health of the mangroves, putting nature and their livelihoods at risk.

A day with the amazing People and the Sea

PEOPLE AND THE SEA

In Cebu, I heard about the work of People and the Sea in Malapascua, an island not too far north.

I could not have been more impressed. They run clean up campaigns, teach the local schools about waste and the environment and run regular dives to check the health of the reef.

Inle Lake

Inle Lake is the second largest lake in Myanmar and together with Bagan probably amongst the top must see places in Myanmar. The fishermen on this lake typically stand on the stern with their legs wrapped around the oar to see clearer through the dense reeds and floating plants. Main fish caught is the nga hpein which is a local carp only found on this lake. The lake is under threat by deforestation, overuse of pesticides and climate change.
