We had to make the last ferry back to the mainland and we weren’t even half way the island. We raced through beauties like these (where the water occasionally forced even my long legs to move a little faster) and finally made it to the ‘terminal’: a small beach. Luckily, a local family had asked her if she had a place to stay. “No, not really” and they offered her a bed. This time around, 4 years later she hoped that this same family was still around and would again, offer us a place to stay. We arrived at their home near this edge of the cliffs and fortunately the family was there again. “Where are you staying?” Ehm, we don’t know yet… “You can stay with us again if you like?” So we had a bed.. and food. They cooked us corn and rice in an old pot on a homemade fire. The next morning we had left overs, we thanked them and left money for them in our room. Months later the lady found me on facebook. She had made us her profile photo and at first I was happily surprised until she went to town with commenting in Indonesian and adding my friends. Maybe a local custom.
